Preparation for First Penance and Reconciliation

“’Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained’” (John 20:21-23, New American Bible).

The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation is a great gift to our lives as Catholics and one that we should frequently receive. Going to Confession makes our hearts pure to receive our Lord in the Holy Eucharist. Therefore, children are prepared for First Penance prior to making their First Holy Communion.

Preparation for First Penance and Reconciliation involves parents and children in preparation through attending mandatory parent meetings, collaborating on the children’s assignments, and growing together in knowledge and love for the great gift of the Sacrament Reconciliation. Our program requires excellent class attendance, attendance at both mandatory parent meetings, along with satisfactory completion of class assignments and other preparatory materials. Above all, sacramental preparation must be centered on the Holy Eucharist. Therefore, we are inviting all of our parents and children to make the celebration of Sunday Mass the most important aspect of their preparation. These requirements will facilitate each child in making a good confession, realizing God’s great gift of forgiveness and love in their lives, and growing deeper in their conversion to Christ. Further catechesis for the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation is ongoing as our children continue to grow deeper in their faith.

“Jesus, Son of the living God, have mercy on me, a sinner”
